A Prayer for Our State
Tomorrow, Thursday, May 6th is the National Day of Prayer. I hope a lot of you will join me at the Capitol on the west steps from 11am to 2pm!
In honor of the National Day of Prayer, I offer up this prayer for our state.
Father God, You are the Creator of all things. You breathe life into every living thing. You sent Your Son, Jesus, to bring light into the darkness. We find ourselves in a very dark time, where right is wrong, and wrong is right. Many who call on Your name, deny Your Supremacy and the truth of Your Word. I see it every day at the Capitol. Some Christian legislators vote to promote immorality, fund anti-God programs, and indoctrinate our children; others just don’t fight against it.
Lord, thank You for reminding me how Your presence and power is evident all around us. This session the spiritual atmosphere of the Capitol has shifted, and many have noticed it. Help the legislators to recognize it is You they sense. I pray they will humbly and honestly seek You. You are a gracious, gentle God who will not force Himself on anyone. Help Your body be Your hands and feet by bringing the gospel of peace to their doorstep and speaking truth to the lies permeating throughout the Capitol. Bring the sweet fragrance of Your love in abundance to the building and fill every room with Your irresistible grace.
Our hearts grieve, Lord, for the brokenness ushered in through destructive policies. Forgive us for our years of silence and apathy. Illuminate a path forward for Your people to restore our state to a place where You are welcome, and Your ways guide us in all things. Strengthen us and give us courage to go outside our comfort zones to do all You ask of us.
Again, I am reminded of Joel 2:13, “Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and He relents over disaster.” Lord, though we do not deserve it, we ask for Your mercy over our state. Help us to lead the way back to You. For it is in You that we will find the answers to life and learn the way of liberty.
It is in the mighty name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
Trusting in the mighty power and grace of Jesus,
Carolyn Martin, CHEC Director of Government Relations
