Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, brought her Rethink School Tour to Colorado last week. The goal of the tour was “…to highlight what’s working. We want to encourage local education leaders to continue to be creative, to empower parents with options and to expand student-centered education opportunities” (learn more here).
With that goal in mind, she asked CHEC to arrange a meeting with families who home educate their children.
DeVos and her staff were greeted by a variety of home educators – second generation homeschoolers, single-parent homeschoolers, and homeschoolers with large and small families. We all enjoyed wonderful hospitality, delicious food, and great company.
After being introduced to CHEC through its vision of families honoring Jesus Christ by embracing home discipleship that is Christ centered, parent directed, and free from government control, we were able to reinforce the central tenet that is beyond all else: teaching our children a Biblical worldview is a God-mandate.
During further conversation, a homeschool dad expressed his concern over vouchers for homeschoolers and, despite her blanket support for vouchers in the past, I believe she heard his concerns, and I pray she will take them to heart.
The rest of the evening was filled with encouraging testimonies from the young people in attendance. They all expressed how home education positively impacted their lives and how they felt blessed by their educational opportunities and their relationships within their families.
The evening ending with everyone singing the Doxology and praying together. My hope and prayer remains that the hearts and minds that are without Him were touched by the love and grace of Jesus that evening.
Executive Director of CHEC, Stephen Craig, interviewed Secretary DeVos. You can view the interview below.
Secretary DeVos wrote these words after her visit, “These dedicated families have selected the educational environment that they think best meets the needs of their own children. We should not stand in the way of their decision, but instead support and applaud the choices families make for their kids” (learn more here). Let’s thank her for that statement and hold her to it!
Action: Thank Secretary DeVos for her support of homeschooling!
