Bringing Truth to the Capitol
Recently, I had a conversation with a legislator about the death penalty. You see, there is a bill (SB20-100) working its way through the legislative process to repeal Colorado’s death penalty law. I know that good Christian people can and do disagree about the implementation of the death penalty. Mostly, I wanted to hear his heart on the matter and see if there was any room for him to hear another perspective. I listened and knew he had made up his mind.
When I asked another legislator where he stood on the issue, he wanted to know what I thought. I could tell he was not set on a position; he was conflicted and searching. I stated my view but gave him a resource that laid out several viewpoints and asked him to seek the Lord’s wisdom. After all, it is the Holy Spirit that changes hearts and minds. We are called to speak truth, and He does the rest.
[You can watch the second reading debate on the Senate floor, but I think more important were the statements made on third reading just before the official vote.]
Loving Your Neighbor
Interestingly, while speaking with the first legislator, our conversation turned to God’s purpose for us here on this earth. To love God and to love our neighbor. Afterwards, God graciously led me to a radio program on policy issues from a Christian perspective. The panel spoke of how part of loving your neighbor is helping craft good policy that reflects biblical principles and the goodness of God.
All of us are impacted by the policies and laws enacted by our government. Well-meaning legislators write laws attempting to help the poor and the orphan, but so often those laws bring increased suffering. As believers, it is essential that we bring policy solutions that will reflect His heart and His ways. We can’t ignore the policy arena if we truly want to love our neighbor!
