The governor has declared a health emergency in the state of Colorado. Gatherings have been limited to 10 people. Worship services have been canceled or have gone online. Schools are closed. The grocery store shelves have been stripped bare of many items. The legislators at the Capitol have taken a recess. The people are succumbing to and feeding on fear.

SB20-163 School Entry Immunizations

The journey of this bill began just three weeks ago and it has been a whirlwind from the beginning. One week was all we got to digest the impact of the seven sections in the original bill before the first committee hearing. Along the way, we found out that a multitude of groups were contacted for input into this bill, but none represented any groups that promote homeschooling, informed consent, parental rights, religious liberty, or medical freedom.

Who Leads the Family?

Is it parents, children, or the state? How you answer that question depends greatly on your worldview. As our culture moves further and further away from its Biblical underpinnings, and as the influence of the church wanes, we see the state stepping in to take on the role of parents. They will say it is to protect the children. The state may even confer rights to children. But, don’t be fooled. Rarely does a child make a decision that impacts the rest of their life without input from an adult. The state wants to make sure that adult is someone they deem suitable and they have trained.

Bringing Truth to the Capitol

Recently, I had a conversation with a legislator about the death penalty. You see, there is a bill (SB20-100) working its way through the legislative process to repeal Colorado’s death penalty law. I know that good Christian people can and do disagree about the implementation of the death penalty. Mostly, I wanted to hear his heart on the matter and see if there was any room for him to hear another perspective. I listened and knew he had made up his mind.

Parental Rights
The Declaration of Independence speaks of “self-evident” truths and “unalienable” rights. Some of them were enumerated in our founding documents. Some of them were not; for example, the Founders believed that the family was the true origin of society. Could they have ever imagined that the state would not only attempt to but also succeed in taking over the authority given by God to the family? Perhaps if they had, parental rights would be one of the enumerated rights.
