A Prayer for Our State

Tomorrow, Thursday, May 6th is the National Day of Prayer. I hope a lot of you will join me at the Capitol on the west steps from 11am to 2pm!

In honor of the National Day of Prayer, I offer up this prayer for our state.

Father God, You are the Creator of all things. You breathe life into every living thing. You sent Your Son, Jesus, to bring light into the darkness. We find ourselves in a very dark time, where right is wrong, and wrong is right. Many who call on Your name, deny Your Supremacy and the truth of Your Word. I see it every day at the Capitol. Some Christian legislators vote to promote immorality, fund anti-God programs, and indoctrinate our children; others just don’t fight against it.

Our Nation Needs Prayer

During the Constitutional Convention, as the members struggled to reach consensus, Benjamin Franklin rose and addressed the assembly with these words: “In this situation of this Assembly, groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understandings? In the beginning of the Contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayer in this room for the divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, & they were graciously answered. All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending providence in our favor. To that kind providence we owe this happy opportunity of consulting in peace on the means of establishing our future national felicity. And have we now forgotten that powerful friend? or do we imagine that we no longer need his assistance?”¹

Take One Small Step Forward

Last week I attended an event where two foreigners spoke about the future of America. One was from New Zealand, the other from the United Kingdom. Their nations are much farther down this road of total government control than we are. To hear their perspective was a wake-up call for many in attendance. These foreigners envy our freedom, but they loathe our apathy. What was their message? The last best hope for the world is us. If America fails to guard liberty, the entire world loses and liberty will never return.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines gender as: “A sex, male or female.” The terms gender and sex were often intertwined in the past. The most frequently used aspect of the word gender emphasized grammatical forms of words. But, in this day, where intersectionality has been elevated to a first-order principle, gender has taken on a vastly different meaning.

The State of the Legislature

Navigating the Capitol during this unique season we find ourselves in has been challenging on many levels. Fear dominates almost every interaction. A cloud of deep oppression hangs over the dome. Our liberties are being decimated while our lives are being micromanaged. Normal has morphed into something unrecognizable. We have willingly been led to this place of compliance because we have forgotten what it means to rise and stand (Psalm 20:7-8).
