Unique Learners

Homeschooling a unique learner can be life-changing – with a lot of challenge thrown into the mix!  Whether your child is a gifted learner or a struggling one, has a learning or medical/physical disability, or anything in between, CHEC’s team is here to help you as you home educate them for a life of purpose and joy.

Recommended Resources

  1. HSLDA’s Homeschooling with Special Needs resources: The Home School Legal Defense Association’s website can help you determine your family’s needs, find resources and legal guidelines, and be encouraged in your homeschool journey.  If you’re a member of HSLDA, you also have access to connect with a special needs coordinator.
  2. SPED Homeschool: CHEC partners with this ministry to support families who homeschool children with learning issues. SPED is made up of in-the-trenches special education homeschooling parents, and they realize how important it is to be involved in a supportive community that understands these struggles. Their purpose is to “Empower Parents Today to Help Their Students Succeed Tomorrow.” Through volunteer hours, private donations, and educational grants, they provide parents with resources, training opportunities, support, information, and encouragement.  To find out how their 150+ years of special education homeschooling experience can help you, check out www.spedhomeschool.com.
  3. Unique Learners’ Column: This monthly column on the CHEC Blog brings parents encouragement and practical, help-for-today suggestions and how-to’s. The posts cover topics such as “Calming an Out-of-Control Child,” “The Importance of Rhythmic Routine,” and “Teaching Jesus Above All Else.”
FAQ: Should I take advantage of services offered by public schools?

Public schools are not obliged to provide services unless you follow their stipulations.  Therefore, if they require enrollment, there is nothing in the law to make them provide services without enrollment. However, some schools might provide the services without enrollment, or some will provide the service if you are enrolled in a private school that does not provide such services.

FAQ: My child already has an IEP from a public school. What should I do?

If your child has an IEP at the time you withdraw them to homeschool, you should send an IEP Withdrawal Letter to the public school. Download a template here (and view a PDF preview here), then use it to create your own and submit along with your Notice of Intent or your withdrawal form from the Independent School you enrolled with.

(This sample letter was created by HSLDA and has specific instructions for its use.)

Testing

Testing in Colorado looks different based on which legal option you’ve chosen. You can find out about the options, and how it affects your homeschool testing, here.

Many families choose to enroll in the CHEC Independent School because of the exclusive opportunity to use the CHEC Parent Evaluation (replacing the requirement to have your student tested or professionally evaluated). You can learn more about the CHEC Independent School here.
