Charlie Kirk was often quoted saying,”Fall in love, get married, have more babies than you can afford.” Pews have been full, even doubled, in the weeks since his death, but that is not the only impact we are seeing. September 10th was a dark day for the nation and a doubly dark day for Colorado. The shooting at Evergreen High School took place minutes before Charlie was shot. Shock and horror filled Coloradans and we digested two reprehensible headlines in one afternoon. Work for the day became impossible and a social media frenzy garnered our attention.

The long-term impact of that day is still unfolding, but strangely enough, hope is in the air. America is taking notice of the indoctrination that has caused our youth to turn away from the values of their family. The same indoctrination that is causing youth to celebrate the murder of this man and carve messages on bullets as they plan a murder. A slow creep of communism has infected the youth of our nation and we have had enough. This is what the Prove Me Wrong events that Turning Point USA started was all about. We need discourse. We need critical thinking, and we need to acknowledge that our youth are being indoctrinated. There is no such thing as a neutral education. Parents saw this vividly during COVID when they got to see behind the curtain into the truth of what their children were being taught. It started a firestorm of families joining the ranks of homeschooling.

The rise of Home Education in Colorado is an indictment on the failure of the public education system. An increasing number of parents are saying, “Hey teacher, leave those kids alone.” There are many great teachers, but the system is the problem. This movement is not about leaving something behind, it is about building something better! Families are discovering the joy of learning together, of critical thinking and socratic discussions, and stirring a community up and filling us with hope. To quote another song, “I believe the children are our future,” where they go we go. Homeschool families are raising them up to be thinkers not followers! Builders, not destroyers! Leaders who love God, love truth, and liberty!

Charlie’s death was a poignant reminder that ideas matter. The culture war in Colorado feels like the epicenter of the nation. This is our moment. Colorado has been hailed as the state of independent free-thinkers. Families who join the ranks of homeschoolers are leading the way. One household at a time, we can raise up a generation.

Maybe this is a message that Charlie would leave us with: Build families who defend the truth and are not afraid to live out their convictions. If these past weeks have shown us anything, it is that people are hungry for hope. And the best hope begins at home!
