Elections Begin with The Caucus

“God cannot sustain this free and blessed country, which we love and pray for, unless the Church will take right ground. Politics are a part of a religion in such a country as this, and Christians must do their duty to the country as a part of their duty to God. It seems sometimes as if the foundations of the nation are becoming rotten, and Christians seem to act as if they think God does not see what they do in politics. But I tell you He does see it, and He will bless or curse this nation, according to the course they take.” — Charles Finney, from Lectures on Revival

In Colorado, the political process begins with the caucus, and it’s happening in the next two weeks. It is the beginning of the road for candidates who want to represent you. It is the beginning of deciding the makeup and direction of your chosen political party. If you are registered as a member of a major political party, contact them and find out where and when your neighborhood caucus will be. It’s time we took seriously our duty to our country and begin at the beginning.

Homeschool Community Makes a Difference!

Though the homeschool community grew substantially in recent years, home education can still sometimes feel like an “outsider,” fringe place. Many homeschooling families will intentionally seek out pods of community for support. Healthy community bursts with ways for the church collective and individual churches to weave life-giving connections that resonate into eternity. Homeschoolers deserve respectful consideration because they are pioneers in their own right. They seek out and carve out a place for themselves! In the spirit of going off the beaten path, I offer this lyric from the United States Air Force: “Here we go, off into the wild blue yonder!”

Wealth & Servitude OR Liberty?

Just the other day I opened my property tax bill and was shocked to learn that I pay almost $1,000 a year to my local school district. As a homeschooling family, imagine what education materials that money could provide for my children. Instead, I’m paying into a school system that can’t teach almost 60% of third graders to read or do math.[1]

We are experiencing an educational crisis. As the legislative session heats up, lawmakers are scrambling to use the abundance of education dollars they expect to flow into the state coffers. Some are even looking to provide funding for homeschoolers. When thinking about how money can impact freedom, consider this quote from Samuel Adams:

Unique Learners: Help! Lifesaver Strategies

He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out His hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Matthew 14:29-31 ESV)

Like Peter, we often have doubts when Jesus wants us to get out of the boat of our life. When He says to us, “Come,” we need Him to hold our hand and rescue us when we start to sink. Jesus is first and foremost the best lifesaver we could ever hope for. We should never be afraid (or ashamed) to cry for help in the storm of homeschooling — especially as we are nearly drowning. We need help first from Jesus and then from those around us that He will use to help rescue us! 

I love to swim, particularly in the ocean. I’m an experienced swimmer, and all of my children are too, after years of lessons and practice. If the surf is strong, it’s easy to be overcome by high waves and those scary undercurrents, which pull you further out than you want to be. Last May during a family beach vacation, my teenage son, although a very good swimmer, called for help when a strong undertow suddenly grabbed him. Thankfully, my adult son was nearby and had a boogie board so he could quickly get to my teen. It was scary to watch! My older son literally saved his younger brother’s life that day. Whew! I reminded my kids later that we never swim alone or in the dark for such a reason.

Rest for the Weary

What to do if you’re burnt out on homeschooling

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28 KJV)

Ahh, rest. After a busy holiday season and launching into the start of a new year, rest seems elusive and, in some instances, unattainable. I look at my planner and there are more lessons to be taught than there are days to get them done. There is no time for rest.

Yet, Jesus invites us to come to Him if we are overburdened. He promises to refresh us if we are weary, worn out, or overworked. We need to go to Jesus anytime we feel that we are going over the edge. His presence will fill and refresh us.

Our Busyness

Rest is one thing homeschool moms need. But there is always something to be done. One more chore that requires attention. A child that needs tending. An errand that needs to be run. Homeschool moms often are task oriented and thrive on getting things done.

Rest is becoming a lost art in our modern culture. Packed within each 24-hour time span is an unsustainable number of tasks we’ve placed upon ourselves, as well as demands others place upon us. Many days there is a revolving door of schedules and commitments. It is tempting to do everything, be involved in everything, and be up on the latest homeschool trends — but never being able to rest really isn’t God’s best for us.
