An independent school is a private school which offers off-campus enrollment to families who want their children to study at home. Colorado based schools provide a legal option for meeting the mandatory school attendance requirements in Colorado. These schools may provide any or all of the following support services: diagnostic testing, curriculum design, academic counseling, testing/evaluation, record keeping, holding test scores for non-enrolled families, teacher training, personal support, enrichment classes, newsletters, support groups, field trips, diplomas, graduation ceremonies. The CHEC Guidebook devotes a section to helping answer your questions about independent schools.
The legality of enrolling in a private school has been based in Colorado Case Law, dating from the Bohl Decision in 1988.

Enrolling in a program not based in Colorado does NOT satisfy the compulsory attendance requirements of the Colorado law. You may, however, choose to use the services of these schools while following the requirements for Colorado home-based education.
