General Session Audition
2010 CHEC Conference--Audition Fact Sheet for Performers
CHEC invites home educated students & families to perform for the general sessions at its state conference. We have openings for three specials (vocal, instrumental, dance, speech, or drama) and six prelude or postlude positions (instrumentalists only). Generally, sacred, classical, folk, or patriotic music fit our needs the best. Soloists or groups are welcome to audition. All content should be sensitive to the Christian environment of the conference; this includes clothing worn by performers. The judges’ decision will be final regarding subject matter and style of performance.
Submission Requirements—Please follow exactly!
All students must be homeschooled; exceptions may be made for accompanists. Family groups are welcome. There is no minimum age requirement, but be aware that those selected will perform on a large professional stage for an audience of about 1800 people.
We can accept audition tapes in the following formats: audio cassette, CD, DVD, or video cassette (VHS, C, or 8 mm). It is not necessary to arrange a professional recording, but do send the best tape possible. Check to be sure your tape works after recording and rewind it, please. Label the tape with the performer’s name and phone number. List what you will be performing and its composer or author on the audition form. Also, note the length of each selection (minutes and seconds). Specials must be 3-5 minutes in length. Selections for preludes and postludes should total at least ten minutes all together. All selections may be submitted on one tape. Record your selection just as you intend to perform it if selected to perform at the conference (including accompaniment, props, costumes, etc.). Audition tapes may be picked up at the conference, if you want them back. CHEC will not be responsible for tapes lost or misdirected, however.
Please realize that many factors are considered in making selections including variety, attention to submission rules, appropriateness of selections to the keynote speaker’s address, etc. Many qualified applicants have to be turned away for totally non-musical or non-performance reasons.
Please be aware that it may be 4-6 weeks after April 15 before you hear results back from us due to the constraints of geography, etc. We attempt to notify everyone as quickly as possible so that you can make your plans for the conference accordingly.
Improving your chances of being selected to perform:
- Follow the rules exactly—each year we get submissions with incomplete addresses, no registration forms, music not timed, etc.
- Let us know how to reach you if you intend to be out of town during May
- Send many selections for us to choose from, but be sure they are well-prepared; we must make selections on what we hear, not on a promise to “have it ready by June.”
- Avoid New Age & rock music, or any music with a rock-type beat.
- Be available all three days, if possible; you can still list preferences.
Tapes must be RECEIVED by April 15, 2010. A completed audition form must accompany the recorded audition format; these should be mailed to:
