2008 Talent Fair

WE REGRET TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE TALENT FAIR AT THE 2008 CONFERENCE HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO LACK OF INTEREST AND ENTRIES.

If you have interest in promoting a Talent Fair we suggest you contact your Support Group Leadership about making it a part of the activities for your group.

AGAIN, THERE WILL BE NO TALENT FAIR AT THE C0NFERENCE.

The CHEC Talent Fair offers a forum in which to present the many gifts of our precious homeschool children.

 

VISUAL ARTS

Includes needle arts, general arts and composition divisions, as in the past.

 

FOOD ARTS

Divisions of preserves, pies and cakes will be judged and displayed!

We would love to taste your children’s best!

 

The Visual Arts and Food Arts categories will be judged on-site and ribbons awarded.

The Performing Arts category will be judged by taped audition prior to the conference.

PERFORMANCE ARTS

Entries of vocal or instrumental music, short skits, speeches, and worship dances will be selected for performances in the vendor hall during the conference!!

Visual and Food Arts Requirements

 

Art

Specific Requirements: Clay/Ceramic - A1

Definition - a work made of clay creatively representing an object, person, thing or idea.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • All clay sculpture should be kiln or oven fired.

  • Entry must occupy a table space no larger than 2½’ x 2½’ x 2½’.

  • Slip molds or green ware available from ceramic supply stores are not permitted.

Specific Requirements: Drawing - A2

Definition - a picture or sketch produced with pencils, crayons, charcoal, pen, pastels, or ink. Images may be rendered in black and white, or color.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • All drawings are required to be matted.

  • The maximum size, including matting shall not exceed 14” x 21” (this allows for an image size of approx. 11“x 17“ before matting).

  • No framing is permitted.

  • Pins might be used for hanging the work at the show.

  • All pencil, charcoal and pastel works must be fixed.

Specific Requirements: Mixed Media - A3

Definition - a work created from more than one material for the purpose of artistic expression, may be produced in two (2) or three (3) dimension.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • All three-dimensional entries must occupy a table space no larger than 2½ ‘ x

  • 2½ ‘ x 2½ ‘.

  • All two-dimensional entries are required to be matted for presentation.

  • The maximum size, including matting shall not exceed 14” x 21” (this allows for an image size of approximately 11“ x 17“ before matting).

  • No framing is permitted.

  • Pins might be used for hanging the work at the show.

Specific Requirements: Painting – A4

Definition - a picture, representation, or an image on a canvas, paper or board, produced with acrylic, oil, watercolor or any other paint media.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • All paintings that can be matted are required to be matted for presentation. The maximum size, including matting shall not exceed 14” x 21” (this allows for an image size of approx. 11” x 17” before matting).

  • No framing is permitted.

  • Pins may be used for hanging the work at the show.

Specific Requirements: Photography - A5

Definition - images, places, or people captured by camera for use as an artistic
expression.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Only prints will be accepted.

  • All photography entries are required to be matted for presentation.

  • The maximum size, including matting shall not exceed 14” x 21” (this allows for an image size of approx. 11” x 17” before matting).

  • No framing is permitted.

  • Pins might be used for hanging the work at the show.

 

Composition

Specific Requirements: Essay - C1

Definition - a literary composition, analytical or interpretive, dealing with its subject from a more or less limited or personal viewpoint; a persuasive composition.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Entries must stay between the word/line limits listed below.

  • All submissions must be typed, double spaced, using a minimum font size of twelve (12) points.

  • Use only one side of the paper.

  • A cover sheet containing the title of the essay, the author’s name, age, and the total number of pages must accompany each essay.

  • If multiple pages are used, each page must be numbered and have the author’s name on the back.

  • Clear plastic covers are preferred.

  • Include two copies of each submission.
    Word limits are as follows:
    8-10 years of age - Minimum 100/Maximum 1000
    11-14 years of age - Minimum 250/Maximum 1500
    15-18 years of age - Minimum 400/Maximum 2000

Specific Requirements: Poetry - C2

Definition - The art or work of poets; the embodiment in appropriate language or beautiful or high thought, imagination, or emotion; the language being rhythmical, usually metrical, and adapted to arouse the feelings and imagination; verse.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • There are many styles of poetry - a good poem will stay true to the form of the style.

  • Use a minimum of eight (8) lines - a maximum of 40 lines.

  • All submissions must be typed, double spaced, using a minimum font size of twelve (12) points.

  • Use only one side of the paper. \

  • A cover sheet containing the title of the poem, the author’s name, age, and the total number of pages must accompany each essay.

  • If multiple pages are used, each page must be numbered and have the author’s name on the back.

  • Clear plastic covers are preferred.

  • Include two (2) copies of each submission (only one copy in cover).

Specific Requirements: Short Story – C3

Definition - a composition presenting a sense of time and place, well-developed characters, and a consistent pace moving the reader through to the resolution.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Entries must stay between the word/line limits listed below.

  • All submissions must be typed, double spaced, using a minimum font size of twelve (12) points.

  • Use only one side of the paper.

  • A cover sheet containing the title of the essay, the author’s name, age, and the total number of pages must accompany each essay.

Needlework

Specific Requirements: Counted Cross Stitch - N1

Definition - a form of stitch, or a kind of needlework in which the stitches are diagonal and in pairs, crossing to form Xs, done on an open-weave fabric.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • No stamped cross-stitch is allowed.

  • Entries may be constructed from an original pattern, a purchased pattern, or a combination of patterns. Originality is encouraged.

  • The pattern must be submitted with the entry.

  • The back of all entries must be accessible for view.

  • Samplers and similar items must be matted, not framed.

  • For needlework such as stitched pictures or samplers, two (2) mats may be used to “sandwich” the project.

  • Entries must not be larger than 16” x 20” finished (including matting if applicable).

Specific Requirements: Crochet/Knitting - N2

Definitions - Crochet - to form fabric by interlacing a single yarn or thread in a series of loops by means of a single hook. Knitting - to form fabric by interlacing a single yarn or thread in a series of loops by means of two needles.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Entries may be constructed from an original pattern, a purchased pattern, or a combination of patterns. Originality is encouraged.

  • The pattern must be submitted with the entry.

Specific Requirements: Embroidery/Crewel - N3

Definition - the art or process of ornamenting cloths or leather with decorative stitching with floss or yarn.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Entries may be constructed from an original pattern, a purchased pattern, or a combination of patterns. Originality is encouraged.

  • If a pattern is used, pattern pieces must be submitted with the entry.

  • Please specify whether hand or machine done.

  • The back of all entries must be accessible for view.

  • Samplers and similar items must be matted, not framed.

  • For needlework such as stitched pictures or samplers, two (2) mats may be used to “sandwich” the project.

  • Entries must not be larger than 16” x 20” finished (including matting if applicable).

Specific Requirements: Needlepoint - N4

Definition - decorating open-weave canvas with wool or synthetic yarn in patterns or regular, even stitches.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Entries may be constructed from an original pattern, a purchased pattern, or a combination of patterns. Originality is encouraged.

  • If a pattern is used, pattern pieces must be submitted with the entry.

  • The back of all entries must be accessible for view.

  • Samplers and similar items must be matted, not framed.

  • For needlework such as stitched pictures or samplers, two mats may be used to “sandwich” the project.

  • Entries must not be larger than 16” x 20” finished (including matting if applicable). Rugs must be no larger than 5' x 7'.

Specific Requirements: Quilting, Small Article, By Hand - (N5)

Definition - stitching pieces of fabric together to form a design, and then stitching the top pieced fabric to a backing with filling between using decorative stitching to enhance the pattern. This category requires all hand stitching. No machine stitching is allowed.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Entries may be constructed from an original pattern, a purchased pattern, or a combination of patterns. Originality is encouraged.

  • If a pattern is used, pattern pieces must be submitted with the entry.

  • The back of all entries must be accessible for view.

  • Articles may include, but are not limited to, placemats, potholders, pillows, wall hangings, lap/baby quilts.

  • Entries must not be larger than a standard lap/baby quilt (approx. 36” x 48”).

Specific Requirements: Quilting, Small Article, By Machine - (N6)

Definition - stitching pieces of fabric together to form a design, and then stitching the top pieced fabric to a backing with filling between using decorative stitching to enhance the pattern. This category requires machine stitching. Some hand stitching is allowed, but only where necessary.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Entries may be constructed from an original pattern, a purchased pattern, or a combination of patterns. Originality is encouraged.

  • If a pattern is used, pattern pieces must be submitted with the entry.

  • The back of all entries must be accessible for view.

  • Articles may include, but are not limited to, placemats, potholders, pillows, wall hangings, lap/baby quilts.

  • Entries must not be larger than a standard lap/baby quilt (approx. 36” x 48”).

Specific Requirements: Quilting, Small Article, By Tying - (N7)

Specific Requirements: Sewn Garments – (N11)

Definition - The construction of a garment through the use of sewing fabric together either by hand or machine stitching.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Whether designing your own garment or following a pattern, or a blend of the two, this category requires that a complete article of clothing is sewn either by hand, machine, or likely a combination of the two.

  • It must be a modest garment keeping in mind the venue of the Conference.

  • Note: Sewn Garments should be modest in nature. If the garment covers the upper body, it must have sleeves (vests and jumpers excepted). No short dresses or skirts, tank tops, swimsuits etc… If in doubt whether your item is acceptable, please don’t hesitate to contact the Talent Fair Coordinator listed below!

 

Baking

 

Specific Requirements: Cakes – (B1)

Definition - A sweet baked food made of flour, liquid, eggs, and other ingredients, such as raising agents and flavorings.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • All entries must be presented on disposable plates, platters or pans.

  • Store bought mixes and/or frostings are not allowed.

  • Must be made from scratch.

  • Decorating will not add or subtract for judging purposes.

  • Can be frosted or not.

  • Entries will NOT be returned unless specifically requested.

  • All entries must be labeled with participants name, age and cake flavor.

 

Specific Requirements: Pies – Fruit or Nut – (B2)

Definition a baked food having a filling of fruit, pudding, etc., prepared in a pastry-lined pan or dish.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • All entries must be presented in disposable tins or plates.

  • Store bought pie fillings and/or crusts are not allowed.

  • Must be made from scratch.

  • Can be single or double crust.

  • Entries will NOT be returned unless specifically requested.

  • All entries must be labeled with participants name, age and pie flavor.

 

Specific Requirements: Pies - Cream or Custard – (B3)

Definition - a baked food having a filling of fruit, pudding, etc., prepared in a pastry-lined pan or dish.

Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • All entries must be presented in disposable tins or plates.

  • Store bought fillings and/or crusts are not allowed.

  • Entries will NOT be returned unless specifically requested.

  • All entries must be labeled with participants name, age and pie flavor.

 

Preserving

Specific Requirements:   5 separate categories – Jam, jelly, preserves, marmalade or fruit butter (see definitions below)

Definitions- spreads are a class of foods with many textures, flavors, and colors. They all consist of fruits preserved mostly by means of sugar and they are thickened or jellied to some extent.

 

Jam- (P1) - jellied fruit spread that uses mashed or diced pieces of fruit, often containing seeds with fruits.

Jelly- (P2) - fruit spread that is smooth and clear.  Is made from fruit juice rather than whole or cut up fruit.

Preserves- (P3) - fruit spread made from juice and whole fruits in large chunks.

Marmalade-(P4) - fruit spread; typically a citrus preserve made with both fruit and its peel.

Fruit Butter-(P5) - thick fruit spreads cooled slowly on lower heat and never taken to the jellying point.  Unlike jams and jellies, they are often spiced.

  Category Specific Submission Requirements

  • Adult supervision suggested

  • Mason type jars only (small jars suggested).

  • Rings required.

  • Proper vacuum and seal required.

  • All entries must be labeled with participants name, age and flavor.
