Colorado State Board of Education adopts National Common Core Standards–2 Aug 10

Education News eNewsletters

Peggy Littleton and Randy DeHoffSBE member Peggy Littleton used visual aids to try to make her case against common standards on Aug. 2. Randy DeHoff (right) provided the deciding vote to adopt the standards.

The State Board of Education (SBE) this morning voted 4-3 to adopt the National Common Core Standards (NCCS) in language arts and math. The vote came after a hearing that included lengthy public testimony, most of it opposed to the common core as a federal encroachment on state and local control of education.  The standards were developed by the National Governors’ Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, but adoption also has become worth 20 points in the federal Race to the Top competition. Colorado is a finalist for that program.

Voting for adoption were Vice Chair Randy DeHoff, R-6th District, Elaine Gantz Berman, D-1st District, Angelika Schroeder, D-2nd District, and Jane Goff, D-7th District. Voting no were Chair Bob Schaffer, R-4th District, Marcia Neal, R-3rd District, and Peggy Littleton, R-5th District.

Littleton had led opposition to the common core and organized the public hearing that preceded the board vote.

From Treon Goossen:   “Here is an article relating today’s events concerning the State Board of Education and the adoption of the National Common Core Standards. I have already been asked if this adoption will impact home educators.  I do not, at this time, see any impact on home educators who file a Notice of Intent to Home School.  Neither do I see any impact on those families who enroll their children in a private school which allows the teaching to take place in the home, supervised by the private school.  I do, however, see impact upon any family who would enroll their children in public school classes, in virtual academies, charter schools, and in any form of public education.”

Folks, standby to see how this will affect you if your children are engaged in public school activities of any kind.  Consider contacting those on the SBE who voted today to express your opinion.

Day at the Capitol 2010 Highlights!

What a day!  God gave us clear weather and we had a great turnout, especially for the Rally on the western steps featuring our keynote speaker, former US Senator and current President of Colorado Christian University, Mr. Bill Armstrong.  Mr. Armstrong was presented with the CHEC Statesman of the Year award for his lifetime of public service.

State Senator and CHEC Board Member Kevin Lundberg sang the national anthem after the Colors were posted by the CAP Mustang Cadet Squadron:

Generations with Vision Director (and former CHEC Executive Director) Kevin Swanson delivered the prayer of petition and then awarded the Bill Roach Family with the Ruth Beechick award recognizing them as homeschool leaders who have distinguished themselves in Colorado.  This was way overdue–the Roach family gives selflessly year after year to homeschoolers in Colorado and nationwide and Bill continues to serves so admirably in the role of CHEC Board President.

Many Colorado State Representatives and Senators turned out to show their support for Christian homeschooling.  Praise God for these men!

Treon Goossen gave us a legislative update which included the good news that our rights to homeschool in Colorado are not being seriously challenged this year.  Amen to that.

Glenn Tyler and his team taught the children upstairs at Pillar of Fire church while Shawn Mathis and I talked to teens downstairs about government and jurisdictions while Brad Hamill taught junior statesmen.

There were many more volunteers that made this day possible–thank you!  I do want to make a special note of thanks to our events coordinator, Scott Davidson, for putting it all together–thank you, Scott!

Please join us again next year as we send a strong message to our legislators that we want to keep our freedoms to educate our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

Another reason to join HSLDA! — 2 Mar 10

We at CHEC have long advocated the Home School Legal Defense Assocation (HSLDA.org).  With a batting record in court that would water any coach’s eyes, they are your first line of human defense against the tyranny of social workers and law enforcement agents who may not fully know or appreciate your rights like the U.S. Constitution 4th Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure without a warrant and/or probable cause.  The cost to join is minimal, especially when you consider you are getting a first rate legal team that stays on the job 24/7.  But, there are many more resources available from them to include the Home School Court Report which keeps you up to date of what is going on with litigation nationwide.  Please pray for Mike Donnelly, our Colorado rep, and all at HSLDA that God will bless their endeavors to protect our freedoms.  And while you are at it, pray for Treon Goossen who vigilantly monitors the Colorado legislative scene.

On Saturday, 24 Oct 2009, Treon & Dean Goossen held a memorial service for Chris Klicka.  Approximately 100 people gathered at Calvary Chapel Eastside in Colorado Springs.  This was a time to remember and give thanks while grieving the loss of a dear brother.  Pictured below are Bill Roach, Treon, and I spoke at the event.  Dean Goossen, Wayne Tully, Kevin Swanson, and Kevin Lundberg also spoke or sang at the event.  Thanks to all who came out.

Memorial Service For Chris Klicka–24 Oct 2009

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Mrs. Treon Goossen has arranged for a time to come together to worship God and thank Him for Chris Klicka’s life.  It is a time to mourn his passing but also to rejoice that he is home.  It is also a time to determine to press on and continue the battle for home school freedoms as Chris taught us so well to do. Consider joining us Saturday, October 24th, at Calvary Chapel Eastside in Colorado Springs, from 10 to 11 am.
